Ascent Trip ReportAfter completing a hike up Slaughter and Blood Mountains, and getting blocked out of a couple other 4000 footers due to inaccessible roads, I decided to make a jaunt up Sawnee Mountain to catch the sunset on the way back into town. Little did I realize that the higher summit was distinct from the Indian Seats summit, but since I had arrived at the trailhead about an hour before sunset, I decided to try and drive up to the higher peak. The road up was one lane, and made for an interesting encounter with a truck coming down the other way, but I took a left when I hit the summit ridge, past a few tacky houses with absolutely stunning views, and parked the car at the large "NO TRESPASSING" gate barring the driveway to the abandoned lot on the summit. I walked right past it and ran all around the grassy summit, finding some decent views to the northwest GA mountains.
I drove back to the Indian Seats trailhead, and started hustling up the trail because I was worried I wouldn't make the peak by sunset. The trail is very circuitous, but with some cross-country shortcuts, I made the peak with a few minutes to spare. It was crowded with people with similar ideas, but unfortunately we would all be dissapointed, as the sun dropped below the horizon off to the southwest, beyond the left edge of the admittedly great view from the summit, leaving us with a pretty sky but no real sunset. Oh well. I ran back down the mountain as fast as I could in order to make a dinner date in town that I had scheduled a little to early.
