At some point in the summer months my family and I went backpacking for two days, summiting Bondcliff and Mt. Bond. I don't think we made it to West Bond. This was my first backpacking trip.
We began at Lincoln Woods and followed the railroad bed all the way to an old logging camp no more than a few hundred feet from the Bondcliff Trail. We camped there that night.
The next day we hiked to the summit of Bondcliff and Mt. Bond. It was windy but sunny and warm I remember. I also recall good views but at the time had much less appreciation for it than I do now. I remember running into only one or two parties at the summit. All I was concerned about though was when I could eat my lunch, Chicken of the Sea Pink Salmon! That same day we hiked all the way out to the car, returning after dark. It was a grueling 15 or so miles. I'm not sure how my brothers did it, they're younger than I am. I remember clearly having to borrow my mother's pole to make it the last mile, hobbling on each step. I put as much weight as I could on that pole. I'm pretty sure I still use that pole today. "Only twice more around the track" my Dad said, referring to a track & field oval. We slowly but surely made it to the new suspension bridge that spanned the Pemigewasset, the pavement on the other side hurting more than the trail.
It was a grueling hike for me, but it was start of a passion I don't think I'll ever give up. |
