Ascent Trip ReportI went up the SE ridge of Indianhead, traversed to Palm Mesa High Point, and then dropped down to the North Fork of Borrego Palm Canyon. From there, I ascended both Pike and Cody before returning to where the ridge to Palm Mesa met the North Fork. From here, it took about an hour to get to the confluence with the Middle Fork. Two bypasses were taken, one where the canyon made a major 180 and another right before the confluence. By this point it had gotten dark and it took me 3.5 hours to bushwhack the 3 miles from the confluence to the palm grove where the trail back to the parking lot began. Another 45 mins later and I was at my car.
The Middle Fork of Borrego Palm Canyon is extremely overgrown and the darkness made it difficult to routefind. Several major waterfalls needed to be bypassed and there was lots of walking in the stream. I do not recommend this route, although it might be easier in the light of day. For comparison, the 8500 feet of gain from the trailhead to Cody, including the ascents of Indianhead, Palm Mesa, and Pike, took 8 hours. The return from Cody to the trailhead, all downhill, took 6.5 hours.
