Ascent Trip ReportCalum's going away hike with Tim, Tony, Joe, and Steve. Started at 8:30am, finished at 4:30pm.
Peaks: Josephine, 5173, Colby Point, Strawberry
Started by leaving one car at Red Box and the rest at the Colby Canyon trailhead. Took Colby Canyon trail to Josephine Saddle, then on to Josephine Peak. The trails spirals up to the top, that doesn't really show on the map. Took the ridge along to grab Point 5173, then scrambled down the north face to get back to the trail. Back past Josephine Saddle, then followed a sort-of trail up to Colby Point. Some tricky route finding and steep slopes on the way. Avoid the yucca and poodledog bush. I thought this was the scariest part. From there we kept on trail to get to the class 3 scramble/mountaineers route of Strawberry Peak. Head left when you get to the base for a good place to start. This was more manageable than I expected - multiple right routes, the wrong routes were reasonably obvious (even when a painted arrow pointed at them, like one near the top), and it was a lot of fun. Good teamwork helped. Definitely be comfortable with class 3 stuff though. For the summit, we brought Strawberry Cream Pie (pro tip: Dupars in Pasadena is open 24/7) and strawberry beer (Golden Road's Balboa Blonde). On the way down, we took the trail that leads south if Lawlor and east of 5166. Shuttled from Red Box back to Colby Canyon. Excellent day, amazing views, fun climb, good people.
