Ascent Trip Report

Second peak of the day (Ghost Mtn

I arrived at the point to park for 2WD vehicles. I had a high clearance vehicle but read about a few spots of high centering ahead. So I would be adding 4 miles round trip to my hike. The clouds were getting less but the wind was increasing. I started hiking up the dirt road about 9:10am. After about 10 minutes, I had to pull off the side of the road as I heard many motorcycles (dirt bikes) coming. The leader saw me and signaled "10"; I nodded as I understood...there are ten of them. After the first 2 passed, there was quite a gap and didn't see the next riders. I continued about 100 feet when I heard the others coming up the road. I stepped aside and waited. The 10th rider signaled to me there wasn't any more. I nodded and waved I understood. I appreciated the simple communication and keeping everyone safe. In a few minutes they were cresting the saddle I was heading towards about 1.5 miles away; then gone. I kept the pace brisk as I figured I was about 15 minutes behind my schedule. The schedule to summit about 11am; when I estimated the Monday Maniacs (group) to reach the summit via Nolina Wash. I reached the saddle, turned left. Shortly began ascending the steep loose rocks to gain the ridge. I was surprised by my pace as I reached the summit in an 1hr 20min. Now I was 30 minutes early according to my estimates. I signed the register. Then took temp/wind readings. It was 44 degrees; winds were 15-20 mph with a gust of 26 mph; wind chill made it 34.6 degrees. It was cold and I was waiting. I moved to the NE side to see if could see the group coming up. I saw them; they were spread out. Found a large rock to take shelter after donning layers and goretex. Sure enough, the lead group of hikers reached me at 11am; the last of the group arrived at 11:30. After sitting an hour, I needed to get moving for warmth and for my next peak objectives (Arena BM, possibly pk 3549 and or pk 3640). I thought about taking a direct route down from the summit. While much shorter, it would be very slow progress and I hadn't planned ahead for this possibility. So I returned the same way making even faster progress (the one time I love gravity). Reached the vehicle in an hour from leaving the summit. Now to move to Arena BM TH...
