Ascent Trip Report

Warm day a few days after a hard snow made this a nice hike. The trails were well used and thus compact. I used microspikes and the going was fast! Entrance fee is still $8 per car. NO DOGS allowed. This is one of only 2 state parks in CO that do not allow dogs because of wildlife predator-prey concerns. Some nice sandstone formations along the way in the lower reaches.

The top is less exciting but decent views to the east. Lots of traffic. good route for kids and I saw many families hiking with their youngsters. All class 1 easy. The very top 15 feet is rock class 2+ nothing harder.

BUT this is not the true peak of the state park so if you want to peakbag the true highpoint, you must go after the points that Covill entered. Now, funny here that requires some off trail bushwhacking and the park prefers you to stay on trail because of the scrub oaks and wildlife and erosion. Realizing that, I used the snow and scooted around the Gambel Oaks thickets and bushwhacked/post-holed the deep snow through the pine/fir tree areas where I could assure myself of not damaging the branches of the oak thicket. GPS coordinates are on the route attached
