Ascent Trip ReportDeparted from GA 75 near mile marker 10 at grassy driveway that veers almost parallel to GA 75 up to abandoned home in woods. This driveway is about a tenth of a mile north of a national forest pullout/kiosk. i walked behind house and began hiking up arm to the Crumbly ridge. No trail on this arm but there is a small ravine that runs straight up the middle all the way to the ridge top. Route up is moderately steep, but with plenty of blowdowns to navigate thru and around.
Atop the ridge i turned left and continued ascending, sweeping a bit from north to east to a subpeak and then north again to the summit of the knob. Views limited to what you can see thru the leaf-less trees. I walked downslope a few dozen yards to where a power line ends. The line comes up from somewhere on GA 75, although I haven't figured out exactly where. On top, the road or track beneath the power line is thick with briars. On the south side of the summit are a couple of concrete and brick foundations of what may have been some sort of communication buildings. Don't know the history. From these foundations a forest track/road heads east. Likely a lot easier to attain the Crumbly Knob summit via this road, but not sure of access location. |
