Ascent Trip Report

My last DPS Mexico peak! Peter, Laura Newman, Mark Butski and I went down to Guadalupe Canyon on Fri. They attempted Pico Risco (which I had done a year earlier up the gully) via the Indian Route, however, were buffeted by cold rain and strong (knock you off your feet) winds. They now know the route and will return. Sunday was a rest day and was sunny although not warm. The Oasis campground is nice and our Vibora site was perfect for us. Monday we left the campsite at 4:30am for the long drive around to the Pescadores trailhead. Note there is a 74 peso toll for Mex Hwy 5, which works out to about $5, which they were happy to take in US cash. Peter had "scouted" the route to the trailhead on Google maps (satellite view). We drove along the border of the dump and kept going until we were very near the canyon mouth. There is a lot of sand on this approach making 4WD HC necessary, but it is a relatively smooth drive. We ascended and descended Jim Morehouse's route that goes farther up and around to the right in the wash, then ascends a moderately inclined gully to the south side of the saddle (past all the really, really bad rock on the usual ridge route), then up the usual route on the ridge the rest of the way. Views were hazy, but that morning on the drive we had been in very dense fog and so we were glad we had a view. We made it down to the wash before pulling out headlamps on the short winter day. Had we known that we could get so close to the canyon mouth and realized its remoteness, we would have left Guadalupe Canyon on Sunday and camped at the trailhead, and would recommend this to anyone else. The border crossing back to Calexico took about 45 minutes.
