Ascent Trip ReportWhat a difference one side of a mountain can be from another. A couple months back I was unable to make this summit. I hiked in heading West from the AT and came within about 75 feet of the top and I could see the summit. But the East side if Spaniards Knob was ringed in briers (nature's concertina). It was hot, I was in shorts, and the briers were thick as thieves all the way to the top. So I figured the better part of valor was to come back in the winter...from the West. Today was that day. The West side of Spaniards knob had NO briers and it was smooth sailing to the top and all the way across the wide summit. I checked the East side again to see if I could go down that way and that was a big fat no. Briers don't go dormant in the winter. So I just hiked back the way that I came (off trail to the AT, West to Jacks Knob Trail and South on Jacks Knob to the parking lot at the entrance of Brasstown Bald.
