Ascent Trip Report

One of the most interesting and diverse of the Brushy Mountains.

The Rocky Face Quarry began mining operations in the 1920's and a RR spur ran up to the base of the cliffs on the west end of the mountain. More recently the land was transferred to the State and then to Alexander County for recreational use. The Loop trail to the summit includes many open rock formations and cascading rock cliffs on the east side. The full Loop Hike is a moderate walk that leads you through Piedmont forest. Perfect day hike for the family.

From the parking lot, I took the Buzzard Roost Trail and finished on the Grindstone Trail. Buzzard Roost rises a hearty 100 feet to a fenced overlook atop the old quarry and then connects with the Hollow Rock Trail, which climbs further to the NE and loops around the summit about 1.9 miles from the start of the hike. Winding down the Grindstone trail is steeper, but has some great views of the rock face and the Piedmont landscape below.

DIRECTIONS: From NC 90 north of Statesville, turn right on White plains Road, and then right again on Rocky Springs Road. After a short drive, turn left on Rocky Face Road and follow the signs to the parking lot at the base of the cliffs.
