This was the first hike with Winter Outdoor Pursuits 2018-2019. We parked along Mountain Road at the Mountain House Trail head adjacent to Gregory Road. We left the car at 3:15PM and took said trail all the way to the summit, which took about 35 minutes. We ran into a couple of people on the trail but had the summit all to ourselves. We took a group photo on the balcony beneath the fire tower. Below we could see the top of the Wachusett Ski Area lift. The sun was about a half hour from setting and the views were wonderful seeing as far as Boston, Worchester, and Mount Manadnock, but not quite far enough to see Mount Greylock. We summited in about 35 minutes on a 1.2 mile trail. We used microspikes part of the way down and headlamps as we hiked the last quarter mile. Decent amount of ice and snow on the trail but far from completely covering the ground. It was dark by the time we reached the car. It't only the first hike, but this group is strong and I'm looking forward to what we could do later this term. Zealand and Guyot? The Kinsmans? Mount Moriah? Tripyrimads? We'll have a better idea after we hike Mount Manadnock on January 5th, the weekend after we return from holiday break. This was our last OP meeting of the calendar year.
