Ascent Trip ReportAfter this climb I only lacked one more ascent to have visited every named county highpoint in the State of Missouri. Devils Horn has two 1210-foot contour lines - (a smaller diameter one to the west and a much larger one to the east). From the access point at a gate along a gravel road to the west, it was only .22 air miles to the first (western) candidate and .34 air miles to the eastern candidate. The eastern highpoint is definitely higher, however, and you don't even need any equipment to determine this. It is very obvious. En route to the eastern candidate, my group, Jim and Betty Grace and my wife, Geri, passed through a non-posted, unlocked gate and followed a field road most of the distance. We had to pass through 2 other gates along the way and step around another gate to the south along a barbed wire fence line to access the actual highest point. The round trip hike required about 20 minutes, including victory photo time. The farm house located across the road from the gate at the starting point is not the residence of the landowner. He actually lives at the end of a road just south of here and about 1/2 mile to the west. This road is very rough, so if it is muddy you will need to access the owner's residence from the south on a much better road. I found the owner to be very happy to allow my group to climb the Worth County highpoint, so it is probably best to not try this summit stealth and continue to keep the owner happy with visitors. I did not climb the other two highpoint candidates for Worth County located to the north. The 1210-foot contour lines that encloses those highpoints are a little larger, so it is likely that this is where the true Worth County highest point is located, but my interest (or bucket list) is not to climb every county highpoint, but only the ones that are named, so conquering Devils Horn satisfied that goal since the northern Worth County candidates are not named.
