Ascent Trip Report

This peak is a notorious P2K "dumpster" peak, located on a logging road in deep forest. But doing this trip with winter conditions is a good way to add some entirely unnecessary interest and challenge to a Lakeview ascent.

On the drive in (on an excellent dirt road) I parked at a wide spot in the road at 2700 feet due to snow. Previous vehicles had made some wheel ruts down to the road gravel, but I was worried about high-centering, icy snow, and getting trapped if it snowed too much while I was away at the summit.

I then biked for a little over a mile, mostly in a dry rut, and stashed my bike a little ways before the gate when the road got too steep and icy. Then it was about a 3 mile hike to the summit, at first hiking in the 4WD truck rut (that went beyond the gate), then through abut 6" of untracked snow for a while before I followed someone's tracks almost to the summit--likely a hunter. It was lightly snowing for most of the hike, making me slightly worried about my car getting stuck down below.

The summit was the usual anti-climactic forested dumpster peak experience, but at least the snow covered up all the slash, stumps, and logging debris. I tagged all the contending snowy berms in the bend of the logging road and called it good.

I was much faster heading downhill in the snow, and my bike saved me some time getting back to the car as I carefully applied brakes so as to not slide on the snow. I did get pretty muddy from the dirt in the truck rut. My car was fine and in no time I was below the snowline.
