Ascent Trip Report

Parked at first washout on Bear Brook Road, as the jeep we rented specifically for this trip couldn't even make it over. The rest of the road beyond the washout was in good condition besides the two chasms where the culverts were ripped out. The road walk was 2.6 miles to the traditional parking area, and was mostly easy with some wilderness views. At the start of the usual route, we walked up the logging slash, then soon turned right (over a slash pile) onto the abandoned ATV trail. From there, the trail was easy to follow as it climbed up alongside logged openings. At one of the clearings, we turned left onto a herd path headed up to the col, but eventually realized this was a less-used route. The most well-beaten route now leaves the ATV trail further up as it gains the ridge to White Cap. We searched around for the main herd path in the col for a while, but once we found it, it was easy to follow all the way to the summit of Kennebago Divide. We saw the only other hiker of the day, on his way over to White Cap and then Boundary Peak for his #99. We soon followed after signing into KD. We followed the path back to the col, and seeing no clear path to the ATV trail, bushwhacked the short distance across. We soon found the main path just further up on the ATV trail, as mentioned above. The climb to White Cap was just as easy. The turn off the ATV trail was very clear and the herd path was very easy to follow through the fern garden. We caught up with the other hiker at the summit as he headed off to Boundary Peak. We took a lunch break at the mostly viewless summit, then we were able to follow the old ATV trail all the way back down. Even with the road walk, we finished early enough to head over to Cupsuptic Snow.
