Ascent Trip ReportAfter coming close on Pershing 4 years ago, I hoped to someday return and follow the fisherman's trail up Jefferson Creek that we'd discovered on the way down. I had seen the report from Martin S last summer and it looked like the best option. I happened to be in the area and conditions looked perfect so made a last-minute decision to head up there at 2am but found the road (2140) gated 9 miles from the trail. A real bummer after driving all that way. I was exhausted after driving all night so took a couple hour nap. I had no beta with but after looking at the map came up with an alternative. I drove all the way around to just below the upper Ellinor trailhead on an old spur. This road is washed out but a short walk leads to the old Jefferson Pass trail which is in miraculously good shape with no blowdowns. From the pass I descended the other side to the road below which connects with 2140 right by the Jefferson Creek trail. This descent was quite a nasty brush bash in places with devil's club mixed among slide alder. I reached the trail and followed the route basically as Martin describes. It was completely snow free but I had no difficulties and the whole route was just class 3 scrambling. 4.5 hrs from car to summit. I tried to avoid the brush on my return up to Jefferson Pass but found an even worse route somehow. I think it may be unavoidable! Still just 4 hrs back to the car, arriving just after dark. Awesome views and maybe the last nice snow free day for the year!
