Ascent Trip Report

gmaps will attempt to take you along an abandoned forest road, but an obvious right hand turn will keep you on the well maintained forest road 549. the road is ok gravel, with a few rocky sections. when you reach monica saddle you'll see a sign directing you to the lookout, and it will say "primitive road". the first hill climb after you turn here is the worst part of the road. my rental kia sportage had no troubles.

expect 50 min one-way from US-60 to the summit.

i stopped before the peak to get out and walk a bit in the crisp winter air.

the summit is clearly not in the wilderness, and it seems that there is a nearby withington wilderness high point, but the summit is still on the wilderness lists. best to visit the edge of the wilderness to be sure.
