Ascent Trip Report

Drove to Rose Valley off Highway 33 to the Rose Valley Campground and then up to the Nordhoff Ridge Road. We called ahead a few days prior to the Ojai Ranger District Office and received the gate code. The road had a few rough spots, not sure they were 4x4 worthy, but the ranger strongly recommends it. After passing the turnoff to Nordhoff Peak and the road to Sissar Canyon the road eventually ends at a barrier just past bump 5479, where we parked.

From the trailhead we continued up the Red Reef Trail, past Creampuff Peak and to the saddle leading to Hines. The knife-edge ridge was only a 10-foot long section which had some exposure. The most challenging section was the steep ascent on loose rock after passing the saddle. We spaced ourselves far enough apart, to where falling rock from our ascent was not a hazard to the ones behind. Reached the summit and signed a new register we left behind. Descended along the same trail.

On the return we ascended the ridge to the northeast of Topatopa Bluff and followed the ridgeline trail that allowed us to bag Peak 6440 and Peak 6410 along the way. Eventually we reached the summit and signed the register. We descended the trail to the west of the summit to our car. There was lots of young poodle dog bush, so the peak will be challenging until it all dies out in a couple of years.
