Ascent Trip ReportI was schedule to leave the Bay Area for the week of Thanksgiving on Sunday, but I due to the horrible smoke from the Camp Fire, I was able to move up my flights and escape on Friday. That left me with a couple extra days to wander around Arizona, but to my disappointment, I woke up feeling particularly lazy on Saturday. However, I was bored by the afternoon, and I managed to get ready and leave the house with my mom with enough time to bag an easy peak before sunset. I started the hike of the "Sombrero" from Sanctuary cove just after 3:30pm. The trail was not very well defined, but I took the trails that appeared the most worn at every junction to the top of the ridge, where I could start cruising. I left the main trail at a saddle between the peak and a knob to the east. I followed the cairns as they led me up and around to the south side of the peak and up a chute. I made the quick scamper across the summit ridge and arrived at the high point at 4:25pm. I had sweeping views of several ranges including the Catalinas, Rincons, Santa Ritas, Baboquivari, Quinlans, and Tortolitas, as well as the city of Tucson. On the way down, I descended another chute that I thought might be a more direct route back to the main trail, but it turned out to be much looser, and I fell several times. I returned to the parking lot just before 5:30pm where my mom was waiting to pick me up. |
