Ascent Trip Report

Mostly followed Desert Rat's track. As soon as 2-track curved right (SE) toward a smaller canyon, I turned left (E) and crossed the wide wash, heading SE on a solid "island". Upon re-entering the main wash, I decided it was good enough. I stayed in for the next 2.7 miles, except briefly walking the flat shelf on the left, in the middle section. Can't say that helped much. The wash was wide enough to rarely get blocked by brush. Initially, the sand and gravel was well compacted and good to walk across. But very gradually, it became softer, and more like walking on a beach. I stayed in until DR's track exited right (S) toward the intended canyon. (On return, I tried to stay farther W, but went too far and encountered a 2nd deep gully. Splitting my two tracks here is better; see "EXIT" waypoint on my track.)

Two canyons merged at the base of the mountains; I went up the right canyon (WSW opposed to S). I entered where their two washes merged (FORK), then split the main fork and stayed left (SE) of the dark red boulders, to get a better start up the canyon on its left side. Just staying in the right wash from the fork wouldn't be terrible either. The wash is generally good all the way up. As it got more bouldery in the upper quarter, I tended to stay out on the right (W) side. At the top of drainage, I turned left for some minor scrambling to the top.

Of the six mountain range highpoints in the area I did this week, this was my favorite.
