Ascent Trip ReportDid this one as a workout before the upcoming Guadalupe Peak attempt in Texas, and also thinking this might be my last chance before spring to do a Sierra peak over 9000 ft. without snowshoes!
Having climbed Incline Peak in September, I knew the first part of the trail, which was good, as I got a little bit confused that time. This time, marched right up it "like I knew what I was doing" until reaching the saddle right below Incline Peak. From there, it was new (to me), but I had a map printed out from Bo Meng's trip report with a "GPS track", so used that as reference.
Once at the saddle between provisional peak 9773 and Rose Knob Peak, I was slightly thrown off by the trail that continued skirting around the SSE side of Rose Knob Peak, and started to follow it. But then I realized I needed to be going up the ridge, so backtracked a few dozen feet to do that. It was a bit of a chore to go up the loose sandy slope, turning into a pile of loose larger rock (talus?), but fortunately it wasn't too far, and before long, I was standing on the peak. Found a sunny place out of the wind to eat my tuna salad snack, then put my windbreaker back on for the return trip, which I knew would be mostly in the shade and producing a lot less bodyheat since it would be downhill.
The return was without incident, and I reached the car just before 5pm - - - and just before dark, as well. Started the hike at 1:10, so the whole thing was well under 4 hours, even though I wasn't particularly hurrying! |
