Ascent Trip ReportQuite a tough day hike, mostly on a rugged trail, some dense bushwhacking although most is avoidable. From SW; high clearance saves 2 miles each way. Driving NW on Mex 53, look for a small white building on R (NE), pull into small layby (26.08502°, -100.63420°, 715m), then track parallels highway before R turn leads thru gate (no lock at time of visit) NE towards the peak.
Overnight Hidalgo, drove to upper trailhead just before first light, fairly brushy, some water damage but OK in fairly basic SUV. Parked at end of dirt road, cattle trough (N26.11025° W100.60790°, 880m). Hiked track (continuation of road) NE direct towards the mountain, followed dry creek then obscure trail leads easily up R then heads steeply up (some scree) to small saddle (N26.11836° W100.59426°, 1214m), then L (NE) straight up slope, brushy in places but well marked. Good trail (N26.12840° W100.57837°, 2105m) traverses R then up to the main ridge (N26.12696° W100.56952°). Initially the ridge is dense brush, then fairly open, then the remaining in or so is dense brush - best to traverse L bypassing the scrub, then cross reentrant and climb easy open ground direct to summit.
On ascent we foolishly followed the brushy crest, hard slow work with plenty of thorny plants; we descended the route described above, as per my GPS track, much easier. Summit area has cross and cairn, highest point is dense brush (N26.11938° W100.55651°, 2645m) 10m W of cross. Surprisingly popular peak: many 2018 entries in summit register. Weather has been excellent on ascent, great views. Higher up it clouds over, and a few drops of rain, making for a nice cool descent. 8h 50mins, 5hrs ascent, 3h30 down. |
