Ascent Trip ReportEric and I did Sherman and Baker as a ski trip via the Squak Glacier. We were able to drive all the way to the TH (last mile or so of road was covered in a few inches of snow). There was just barely enough snow to skin up the trail (a few carries required). Camped at 6800' and enjoyed a beautiful sunset.
Monday morning woke up at 3 AM and left camp just before 4 AM. We were able to skin up the Squak Glacier until ~9000' where the route was complicated by crevasses and exposed ice. We found a bridge that allowed passage through the tricky section with a little bit of front-pointing. From there to the base of Sherman was a mixture of postholing and cramponing across ice. We took a direct steep snow line up the south face of Sherman, then descended the west ridge (much easier). Then we hiked up to the summit of Baker. I got my first S.O.S. (skis on summit) on Baker and "skied" off the summit. The Roman Wall was in fantastic shape for skiing, so much fun! Donned crampons again for the tricky section of the glacier then enjoyed an awesome run all the way down the lower portion of the Squak back to camp. We were able to very carefully ski from camp all the way down to about 5000' then hiked out the last few trail miles in our ski boots.
I cannot thank Eric enough for his patience on this trip. I am a complete ski touring newbie, and also pretty new to winter camping, and not once did he lose his patience thorough my multiple gear failures, slow and clumsy transitions, and general slow pace (Eric broke trail 95% of this trip - I could never keep up with him even following in his postholes!). Couldn't ask for a better partner and I learned a TON on this trip. Thanks Eric!
