Ascent Trip Report

This is a track for the main trail up to the Ijen crater. It is a busy route in the early morning with tourists going up to see the "blue flame" before dawn down in the crater. We didn't do that and went around to the east side of the rim for great views into the crater with its turquoise colored lake. There are miners selling interesting pieces of Sulphur they dug out from the crater, but I don't recommend buying any if you intend to fly home with them. Our small chunks of Sulphur were found and confiscated at the Denpasar airport baggage inspection. They showed up on the x-ray and were said to be flammable material so we couldn't take them. It wasn't a big loss since we only paid a few dollars for them. 10/18 RLC
