Ascent Trip ReportHiked with Lee and Marnie. We decided to get an early start because of the impending Nor'easter. Rain and snow predicted to begin around 12:00 or 1:00. We left Lee's house at 5:20 and got on the trail at 7:30. Temperature was around 34 F and it was windy, but once we got into the woods, it was fine. The trail is pretty mellow until shortly after the split to go to Haystack, then there are some steeper parts. Definitely steeper with a bit of scrambling nearer the summit. Even though it was overcast, the view from the summit was great, but too windy and cold to stay there long. We were getting hit with just a bit of freezing rain. On the way down, light rain increased to moderate, so we descended carefully to avoid slipping. Saw several people heading up as we were heading down. Not sure what kind of conditions they were going to encounter at the top--especially the two men who were just starting to McKenzie when we were almost down. This was the final peak I needed to complete the Saranac Lake 6er challenge, so we headed to the park to ring the bell, then to the store to buy 6er merch (hat, t-shirt, and hoodie). |
