Ascent Trip ReportParked at Scutt Road lot. Hit South Mountain during a hike to Boulder Rock, Split Rock. Eagle Ledge, Sphinx rock and former sites of the Kaaterskill Hotel and Catskill Mountain House. Also found a geocache in a cave. This is said to be a very popular hike and, yes, there were many people, many (including myself) who were asking each other which way to go even though most of us had maps, GPS, etc. and there were trail signs every which way. Found the highlights, but.... was following a map and guide I found on the internet ("Catskill Mountaineer" 2001-2010) because it said there was a plane crash somewhere near the junction of the Escarpment Trail and right to Boulder Rock. A little research said there was a stone marker and some plane parts along the trail. I didn't see any. I went down a steep embankment into the area and didn't see anything, either. Asked people on the trail. One man said there is a crash at Stoppel Point. Not the same one. After seeing the vast view from the Catskill Mountain House (and a wedding coming up from another parking area nearby...in the wind and driving rain), I tried finding the Scribner Mill House shown on the guide map. The map showed a loop that should have led me back to Scutt Road. Well, it didn't and I ended up at some campsite which was over a mile from Scutt Road. I walked an uphill road back to the Scutt Road lot. Thank goodness for setting a way point for my car.
