Ascent Trip Report***Sierra Club Outing***

DPS trip. We camped out the night prior at the abandoned RV park on the south side of Hwy 190. Hike in via a slight variation to DPS route A (pretty much every trip report I've seen takes this same variation). Like others before us, we took the gully NE of x3900T rather than the ridgeline adjacent to that gully. There's a pretty well defined use trail that starts out in that gully and goes pretty much (a couple of vague spots that are easy to find if you pause a bit and look around) all the way up to the summit. Once this one starts going up the steep, it really never stops being steep, sometimes alarmingly so. But the views are so good up top that the steep is fully worth it. We came down the same way we came up.
We camped that night at that same old RV park. This is a good camp spot; it's really easy to find and is just outside of Death Valley NP so you can have a campfire there. Lots of strange flies around camp; slow and stubborn, but once it got dark they vanished. We had an excellent party in camp that night; lots of food and drink, and we got to listen to the LA Dodgers clinch their place in the World Series on my satellite radio. Visually stunning light show from thunderstorms later that night once everyone had gone to bed that lasted for hours. Rain from those T-storms that night and into the morning caused us to bail on climbing Smith Mtn on Sunday. Oh well, just gonna have to come back.
About 9.2 miles and 3,700' gain for the roundtrip, which took about 9.5 hours to complete.
