Ascent Trip ReportEntered 10/21/2018.
This trip was done with Outdoor Pursuits during the Fall 2018 season. We left campus around 3:45 and arrived at Living Water campsite just after sundown. The next morning we drove about 10 minutes to Haystack Road, parking at the trail head the end of the road. We then hiked to the summit of North Twin, crossing the Little River three times and beginning to ascend after that. We split up after the start of our ascent because half of the six of us were much faster hikers than the others. With approval we hiked to the summit in about an hour, reaching the summit around 11:45AM. We then waited until 1:15PM for the rest of our group to reach the summit on some exposed rocks at treeline. During that time we enjoyed the clear view of the Presidential Range to the east including snow capped Mount Washington. We ran into several of nice people ranging from solo hikers to groups of four. Once they arrived, we took a group photo and checked out the overlook about 50 yards away for a wonderful view of Franconia ridge. We hiked down around 2:00PM, crossed the Little River once and used a herd path to skip the other two crossings. We reached the car at 5:30PM.
I really enjoyed the hike! The leaves had yet to fall at lower elevation and the views were better than I had seen them in some time! The original plan was to summit South Twin as well but the pace of the group as a whole prevented that. For a few moments my blood was boiling but it's okay. It's just another excuse to get out there again! Unfortunately I don't think two of our group members enjoyed the hike. We'll try something easier next weekend, maybe Cannon Mountain!
