Ascent Trip ReportKnocknalougha and Knockshanahullion, Ireland (Hewitts). I’m keeping these summaries short as I’m on a two month tour of Ireland and there’s a lot of hills to hike and therefore lots of entries. All mapping used are view ranger digital OS 1:50 or 1:25. You will get the best results by uploading my wikiloc gpx giles into this mapping software. Parking for this route is a large car park on the mountain pass on the Tipperary Waterford border on the R668. It was a late afternoon bimble so I just picked a trail that headed west and uphill so wandered a bit. I soon learned that a dotted line on an Irish OS map means a fence line/berm. In this case it was a berm of a kind so follow this from the start. To keep things short I went straight up to the summit of Knockshanahullion and then followed a berm on undulating ground all the way to spot-height 551 some 2kms away. I then kept heading west on a mix of trail x-country to the trig point on Knockshanahullion. Not wanting to go back the same way I headed south east to the corner of the forest passing a cute cairn on the way. Once at the forest there is a wide track running around all the way east until you run out of forest 2.5kms later. Here there is a path that runs uphill directly north to the berm again. Hit the berm and follow it back to the car park. The evening was glorious on my outing with great views and it was a nice 9.5km hike in 2hrs 50min with 603m of ascent.
