Ascent Trip Report

This trip was kind of a debacle from a work perspective, but I had fun from a personal one. I drove from Lyman Lake to the Blue Peak TH early in the morning, driving up into the snowy upper elevations. They had at least six inches of wet snow on the ground at the TH. I was trying to hike a big 10+ mile loop, but it was not to be so. I started out on the trail next to the kiosk which was unmarked as far as number. I thought I was to be descending into the valley, but it turned out I was going up towards the peak. Almost immediately there was brush covering the trail and it became a wet and prickly bushwhack in the 30F weather. The heavy snow was causing a lot of the brush to be overhanging as it was. Parts of the trail were ok, but I didn't see the first junction to the left at all, and the going was so slow that I just decided I would go to the peak and back. I wasn't happy about being in my best ski coat for this thorny foray. I eventually made it after breaking trail the whole way. The steps were missing on the bottom flight of the lookout tower, but the supports were easy enough to walk up and I checked out the frost upstairs. It was so foggy that I couldn't see more than 200' in any direction. I went back the way I came, but came across a group of three people and four? dogs. They looked to be hunting.
