Ascent Trip Report

Drove in to the Sturgeon River on Friday to check the water level. It was clearly too deep to drive across. With my waders I had no problem getting across. Water was waist deep and fast, but easy enough to navigate. Knowing we had to start at the Sturgeon and needed our waders we returned to our Sudbury hotel.

Saturday morning we were on the road at 5:00 AM and drove in the dark via woods roads until we reached the Sturgeon River shortly after daylight at 7:30. We waded across and set out hiking around 8:00 AM. We carried our waders not knowing if we might need them again. Luckily we did because a little over an hour into the hike there was another crossing where we used them. About halfway out we decided to lighten our load and left our waders to pick up on the way back.

The overall hike and terrain was relatively easy. Even the section described as bushwacking was quite easy to follow with the trail and ribbons. We reached the peak at 1:00 PM, took some pictures and then headed back down. There were some snow squalls on the top when we were there. We arrived back at the river just as it was getting dark at 7:30. We waded back across and were back in Sudbury at 10:00.

For anyone doing this trip via the Ishpatina Ridge overland trail, I would highly recommend you download the Avenza Maps app and download Jeff's Map - Temagami - Version 1.0. This was incredibly helpful in navigating the logging roads into the Sturgeon River and also the Ishpatina Ridge overland trail itself.
