Ascent Trip ReportTook a short detour from Highway 36 via Lanes Valley Road and Inskip Road while on the way to Lassen Forest. The gate was open and I drove to the top. The forest lookout, Nina, was still on duty so I climbed up to the platform and visited a while. She said few people actually come up and visit; I was the first visitor this year (aside from fire fighters). The register dates back to the 1990's and had several old peak bagger entries. It was also the first year in 20+ that she has not reported a fire. Since so many people now have cell phone most fires are reported before she sights and calls them in. Also the valley was full of smoke with poor visibility much of the last few months. The tower will close for the season this weekend (Oct 14). It has now permanently replaced the < href="http://www.peakbagger.com/peak.aspx?pid=2531">Turner Mountain lookout tower which will not be http://www.peakbagger.com/climber/ascent.aspx?aid=261917
>rebuilt.
There's a USGS benchmark directly under the tower but the NGS benchmark (which I reported) is on the far side of the summit on some rocks above a comm equipment shack. |
