Ascent Trip ReportThis is one of the easier Census Division High Points of Newfoundland to attain. From Deer Lake, drive the Trans Canada Highway east for about 65 km and turn off on a good gravel road (unsigned). Follow this road (passable by most passenger cars) for 8km, then turn left on a spur road for 1.7 km and park near the height-of-land.
The hike is a very short bushwhack, a little annoying in spots but not really that bad. Down low the trees have enough spacing for easy travel, and up high you can follow a line of open, slabby rock domes and ledges with nice views. A GPS is helpful, or just aim for the visible rock ledge you can see from the road.
I thought I had reached the top at a large rocky dome, and I even took some summit photos. But I could not see for sure that the ridge dropped off to the northeast, so I plowed through a deep brushy cleft for a few horizontal meters and came out on the true summit rock, where it was obvious that there was no higher spot further along. It was complete with trig bolt and a jar with a register--it had been placed over 4 years ago by Serge Massad, and I was the second person to sign it. Not a highly trafficked spot!
After a short rest I returned by a variation of my upward track. I crossed a boggy old logging road, but it seemed quicker to bushwhack back to my car directly instead of exploring where it went. The whole trip took less than 45 minutes.
