Ascent Trip ReportNorthbound on S-2, aka Sweeney Pass Road aka Imperial Highway, aka Great Southern Overland Stagecoach Route of 1849, turn right on Dolomite Mine Road. I was able to negotiate it with a Honda Civic. There is a T-crossing. Turn left and it will take you to the Dolomite Mine. I stopped short when the road got a little gnarly, but the difference in distance was inconsequential. I took a minute to explore the ruins of the Dolomite Mine. Following an assortment of old roads, goat-paths, and rocky washes, I ascended the hill with minor difficulty. Walking around the the right, I ascended the plug without scrambling and noticed there were three plausible peaks. I thought I had reached the peak, but found no marker or register. In about the 11 o'clock position, I spotted a cairn, so that was my next stop. I found a metal stake in the ground and a pair of tennis shoes embedded in the cairn; but no register or benchmark. Following the map on Topo Maps+ I found the True Peak with a volcanic plug, a register and a benchmark.
Getting down was a different story. I found myself one wash to the north of where I had come up and it was more difficult. Eventually, I checked the GAIA map and discovered I had drifted farther north, thinking that a volcanic plug was the original target of my ascent. Trip down was scrabbly and treacherous. I started leaning to the left and down to one wash over from my car. My GAIA track told me I was just a few feet away and I found the car where I left it.
For some reason, exporting my GAIA tracks to Peakbagger is hit or miss. If anyone knows how to make this work, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
