Ascent Trip ReportOval Peak car-to-car the back way
50 miles, 11kft elevation gain, 4:15am - 9:15pm Sept 30
The crescent mountain fire closure zone area had just been reduced on Saturday, meaning the trails west of Oval Peak were now open, and the peak itself was outside the closure zone. I was trying to tighten my Bulger finishing time window, and needed to re-climb Oval to shave off a few more months.
I left the Foggy Dew trailhead on my mountain bike Sunday morning at 4:15am, mostly pushing it, but riding it a bit to Cooney Lake by sunrise. I ditched it there, then hiked over Angel's Staircase, around to Boiling Lake, and then on the summit trail to Star Lake. I ran as much as possible to speed up the trip.
I reached Fish Creek Pass around noon, then traveled cross country to the summit by 2pm, just as it started snowing. I recorded 25 miles from trailhead to summit on my GPS. It was a long hike/run back, and I reached my bike an hour after sunset at 8pm. The bike ride down was thrilling in the dark and fog. I wore my brakes down to the metal, and flipped over once, but was uninjured. I made it back to the trailhead at 9:15pm, then to Seattle around 2:30am, with a couple hours to spare before I needed to be at work at 6:30am.
