Ascent Trip ReportStarted the day at the Mt. Lola Trailhead.
Trailhead was fairly easy to find based on approach descriptions on SummitPost. There is a big sign again pointing to the trailhead parking area. The last 3 miles of the drive were a bit rough. No potholes but lots of pointy rocks sticking out which made this a bit unpleasant.
For the hike up I took the Mt. Lola trail. It was cool (around 50F / 10C) when I started and got fairly windy at times. Trail is well maintained and easy-going for the most part. The last half mile or so you walk on the summit ridge so you are a bit more exposed to the ridge winds. My Garmin showed 43 F / 6C which combined with the wind chill made this a bit nippy. The summit has a nice little wind shelter made of rocks though. After a short break I headed over to the North summit to bag the Nevada County highpoint as well. I didn't see a trail but this part didn't require one anyway. It's a nice and obvious cross-country walk with the summit in sight for most of the time.
After the North summit I planned to drop to the East for about 200 ft to a logging road marked on some maps and still visible when looking at the satellite image on Google Maps. One of the older trip reports also has a GPS track that followed the logging road down the hill towards the meadow in zig-zag shape. It turned out though that all these logging roads are no longer usable and have been thoroughly "demolished" at some point by an excavator. They are now piles of sand, rock, and trees and even less passable compared to just going cross-country. So I abandoned the idea of following the logging roads and just made my way down to the meadow going cross-country.
