Ascent Trip ReportFrom the trailhead for Hinesburg town forest, I made my way back to US2 and headed east. In Waterbury, I followed VT100 north and drove all the way to Stowe where, after having to check directions, I turned onto SChool street/Stowe Hollow road. Following the signage to the trailhead parking at Pinnacle Meadows, I arrived and found it was quite packed with cars. I was lucky to find a spot along the road just before the gated trailhead.
After getting ready, I took off behind a few groups. I passed every one of them going at my usual quick pace, and soon reached the forest where the jeep trail went through a tight hairpin, crossed a meadow, veered right, and became a true foot path. Going around steep rocky bands and below the Pinnacle's outcrop, the trail reached an area where it descended back into the valley, away from the summit. I could see a very well defined herd path going straight up the mountain and, after checking the map, decided to head up that way. It was a light bushwhack on relatively good footing, but when the slope lessened, I still had to fight some branches to emerge back on the official trail. From there it was only a couple minutes until I was standing on the summit rocks where tons of people were basking in the sun.
I rested for a few minutes before I took off again. As I overtook a father and son, the man commented on my Fjallräven pants and we struck a conversation as I have already noticed that the stretchy fabric around the joints is already plushing after about a month's use. At the same time, I asked them if there was a junction for the trail to mount Putnam and they answered that I couldn't miss it. I just had bypassed it by shortcutting on the way up.
From there it was a quick descent back to the col to Hogback Mountain where I reached the huge sign where my next ascent would start.
