Ascent Trip Report

Having visited most of the Wapack Range already, we decided to make a trip to the last exciting area of the range we hadn't seen. We approached the Wapack Trail from the east side of Binney Hill Road. There is a good parking area shortly after the road turns to dirt - it is on the right as the road approaches a steep, rough section. You might be able to drive further up the road in a jeep or rugged truck, but the washouts are pretty severe. It is only a half mile to walk to the Wapack Trail anyway. The Wapack comes into the road from the left at a gate and follows it for 0.2 miles to an impossible-to-miss right turn that is marked with multiple signs and five white arrows painted directly onto the dirt and grass. The next section is a long and tedious section along Binney Pond (really just a big swamp), but it has some mountain laurel that would be nice when in bloom. Watch out for the mosquitoes here though. The climb up Pratt Mountain is pretty steep for southern NH, but it's short and there are some cool grassy glades. At the first ledge, there is a side path on the right that goes out to a nice overlook over Binney Pond and Mt. Watatic. From there on, there are scattered ledges with views in different directions. Overall, it is a very nice walk over to Stony Top, which has the best view. Make sure to continue all the way across and slightly down from Stony Top to get to the most open ledge with the view of Monadnock. We continued up to New Ipswich Mountain, but there were no good views up there.
