Ascent Trip Report2014-10-07
2014-10-04 started at Billy Goat Corral, hiked over Billy Goat Pass on trail 502 and descended into Drake Creek Basin. We left the trail where the old trail 532 should have been (did not find it) and traveled east into upper Drake Creek Basin and climbed South Fool Hen directly up its broad, open south slopes (did not find the old trail per USGS maps), then stayed on the ridge over points 7987, 8062, and 8082, then descended to Fool Hen Lake and camped. On 2014-10-05 we left Fool Hen Lake and regained the ridge and climbed Fool Hen as well as point 8107, then descended northeasterly to trail 532 and climbed Diamond Point, Zirconium (Bauble Butte), and over all the sub-summits along the ridge, then up and over Corral Peak and over point 7918 NW of Corral Peak, all the while staying directly on the ridge crest. The cleft between point 7911 and Corral Peak (pt 7995) is easily climbed down to and out of, staying on or near the ridge crest. After climbing Corral Peak and point 7918, we found a reasonable slope to descend to Corral Lake before reaching the 7,600' saddle. We camped on the west side of the Lake. On 2014-10-06 we circumnavigated Corral Lake counter clockwise to explore this beautiful basin (the golden larches were in full glory, we took many photos), then we picked up trail 502C on the east side of the lake and hiked to McCall Gulch trail 502. We stashed our gear at the junction of trails 502C and 548, then took trail 502 north to Peeve Pass and climbed Sheep Mountain via the East and South ridge, staying on the ridge and enjoying the views down the steep East Face of Sheep and of Sheep Lake. Big boulder hopping and scrambling on the ridge was a hoot. Many Ptarmigans dotted the slopes on the steep east flank. They were readily noticeable against the yellow rock, for they were already white for winter. After summitting Sheep we returned to our gear and hiked down into McCall Gulch and set up camp just northwest of Larch Pass in a flat meadow; On 2014-10-07 we left McCall Gulch and took trail 502 to Larch Pass and climbed Two Point, then hiked out trail 502 back to Billy Goat Pass and Billy Goat Corral. To improve on this route, start at Billy Goat Pass and ascend Burch Mountain, then stay on or close to the ridge to S Fool Hen and then on to the Fool Hen peaks, etc.
