Ascent Trip ReportComing from Mt Mitchell, we drove through the touristy Indian town of Cherokee and north up the 441 into Smoky Mountains National Park ( no fee) . After about 20 miles we turned left, west,on a tarmac road signposted Clingman's Dome. This road is closed Dec 1- March 31. After c 5 miles of winding uphill we reached a huge tarmac carpark with toilets, visitor centre, no fee and lots of people. It is then a 20 minute, steepish, paved walk, meeting the Appalachian trail, to the summit where there is a viewing platform. We found no survey mark of identifiable natural HP. Trees surround the summit, but the sunset from the viewing platform was spectacular with lines of interlocking blueish ridges disappearing into cloud. Our third state HP of the day. We camped at Smoke ground NP campsite back down the 441.
