Ascent Trip ReportAfter Saasafras, S Carolina HP, we followed the wooded and misty Blue Ridge parkway from near Asheville to the junction (Black Mountain Gap) with the road to the Mt Mitchell state park- all tarmac and no fee. 5 miles from the junction and after passing a campsite, park office, restaurant and gift shop you reach a large free tarmac carpark with small museum, toilets and a nice picnic area. It is a 300m paved walk to the summit. At the summit is the huge grave of Prof Mitchell who died trying to prove this was the highest mountain locally and a concrete viewing platform. There is a pseudo survey mark embedded in the platform. The natural high point appears to be outcropping rock by the grave. A few views of the wooded Appalachians appeared through the mist. It would have been better to have spent the day here exploring the various trails eg Tom Thumb. However, on the day we visited an impending coastal hurricane meant the paths were being closed ( a mandatory evacuation) from 4 pm. We hurried on to Clingman's dome, Tennessee HP.
