Ascent Trip ReportFrom Unicoi Gap I hiked Blue Mountain on the way to Spaniards Knob (what were they thinking when they named that one?). The spot where I left the trail (about 2.5 miles) seems obvious but there were no signs of anyone else having left the trail or having hiked up the ridge to the top. Unlike everyone else who hiked Spainards Knob before me, my way up was blocked by chest high Deepwoods Horsebalm, blowdown, lots of Poison Ivy and the worst briers I've seen in years! I turned around less they 75 feet from the top. I dropped off the ridgeline on both sides but could find no way around the briers and they were just to thick to continue going up. I'll do Spaniards Knob again, probably in December or January in hopes that the way to the top will be less crowded. If you do this one...where long pants!
