Ascent Trip ReportAn out and back hike on the boundary line swath over 3 peaks … 17.2 km, 2000 foot gain, 6:15 hours RT
This is day 3 of our 9 day hiking trip to the Riviere du Loup area. We took-in 3 USA/CA Boundary Line Peaks southwest of our TH on the Quebec side of the border.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO THE TH
From the JCT Hwy #289/Rue de La Frontiere in the village of Estcourt at the south end of Lac Pohenegamook, Rue de la Frontiere to the south crosses under the RR Tracks and makes an immediate right, as it heads/winds southwest, more or less parallel-to the USA/CA Border. At 6.8km comes to house #1866 on the right where it makes a bend to the left (south) as a smaller road and continues south .8km to the USA/CA boundary line swath (47.41172,-69.27409) at a hunter's stand.
We parked just before the swath at the small clearing, our TH for the 3 peaks in this TR.
From our TH I hiked westbound (southwest) on the swath going over 3 Boundary Peaks (Monument 187, 189 and 192).
BOUNDARY PEAK 187 (47.39106,-69.29517) … wb on swath, 2.9km, 600' gain, 1:15 hours.
From the TH I hiked southwest 1.9km to Boundary Monument 187 at the crest of the USA/CA Boundary Line. The actual HP of Boundary Peak 187 is on the Quebec side (west) at 200 meters inside some dense woods. On-route to 187 I past-by Monuments 185 & 186 (both original 1842 cast iron in a concrete base), and Monuments 186A & M186B (both with a BM "USA/CA" embedded in a round concrete pedestal, 15"diameter X 20" high). I have seen this type of pedestal only a this end of the Boundary Line.
BOUNDARY PEAK 189 (47.37778,-69.30882) …. wb on swath from Boundary Peak 187 ... 2km, 280' gain, 45 min.
Continued westbound on swath 2km to M189, passing-by Monument 188 (original 1842 cast iron) and Monument 188A (BM "USA/CA #188A, 1988" embedded in large concrete pedestal as per M186A foregoing).
BOUNDARY MONUMENT 192 (MONTAGNE BRULEE) (47.35314,-69.33304) … wb on swath from Boundary Peak 189 … 3.75km, 360' gain, 1:25 hours.
Continued westbound on swath for 3km to the summit of Boundary Monument 192. On-route passed-by Monument 189A (BM "USA/CA" embedded in a large concrete pedestal as noted above), and Monument 190 & M191 (both original 1842 cast iron).
Monument 192 sits on the crest of the USA/CA Boundary Line. There is higher ground on both sides of the boundary line, with Montagne Brulee being a short whack (west) inside the Quebec woods.
I backtracked over Peak 189 (380' gain) and Peak 187 (240' gain) to the TH, a total of 9 km in 2:50 hours.
The swath had a mix of knee-high grass, cuttings with stubs, a lot a wet boggy areas, a major wet area where I went right inside the Quebec woods, hidden foot plant. Past Monument 190 to just before Monument 192, the swath is heavily overgrown (difficult). Overall the terrain fairy flat, no major obstacles like very steep pitches, rocky areas or ledges. Numerous Hunter's Stands with salt-lick traps all on the Quebec side - not a one on the Maine side.
Overall I found the hike not easy and very taxing, came out zapped.
I should note that I did not look-at/research a southern approach from the USA side.
We overnighted at the Penehegamokk Sante Plein Air CG (34$), east side of the lake and north of Estcourt, QC.
