Ascent Trip Report

During my 2 year church mission I lived in various locations in Veracruz and Puebla. When living in Jalacingo (located outside Teziutl√°n, Puebla) myself and a few other missionaries summited El Cofre, as the locals refer to the mountain. We (six of us) all crammed into a pretty small taxi in Altotonga. The taxi driver took us past the town of Perote, and then up the lower slopes of El Cofre. After making a couple wrong turns, we found the road up to the summit. High on the mountain, the road's condition gradually became pretty bad. Our driver turned around at maybe 12,000 feet?, leaving us to walk up the rest of the way in the cool morning. The sun rose just before we summited. On top it was quite a bit colder than the Mexican weather we were all used to. I remember seeing my breath - it must have been below freezing around sunrise.

After summiting we walked around the high mountaintop for a while before walking down the long road to the town of Conejos. A guy gave us all a ride in the back of his pickup to somewhere close to the town of Perote. from there we took a bus to Altotonga and then Jalacingo / San Juan Xiutetelco. It made for a long day of taxi rides, hiking. and travel.
