Ascent Trip ReportSo in spite of all the warnings, checking the map carefully, and watching for the cairn, we STILL missed the cairn for the turnoff to Lillian Brook trail, which added some significant mileage and time to our hike. We also did not end up doing East Dix (Grace) due to the weather at the summit of South. With going the wrong way, summitting South Dix then going down over Macomb, we left the car at 6:50 am and were back at 3:40. The day was pretty hot and humid and we covered 11.42 miles. Our wrong turn added about an hour and 1.6 miles to our trip. The cairn to Lillian Brook is on the right side of the trail, at about 3.1 miles, where there was water crossing the trail (very small streamlike).
Below are times and mileages for the trip. All distances should be about 1.6 miles less if you don't miss Lillian Brook Trail.
From Elk Lake Parking to Macomb leanto: 2.25 mi, 52 min
To the Lillian Brook Bridge (WHICH YOU SHOULD NOT GET TO IF YOU ARE GOING UP THE TRAIL!): 3.45 mi, 1:32 hr
Realized we were completely wrong and turned around at 3.95 miles
Found the cairn for Lillian Brook Trail we missed at 4.77 mi, 2:30 hr - spent some time deciding whether we still wanted to climb
The Lillian Brook Trail was easy to follow (once we found it) and a nice, gentle climb
Cairn for Hough/South Dix intersection: 6.08 mi, 3:40 hr
Immediately after this intersection the trail became much steeper and wetter, with some tricky, narrow spots
Cairn for South Dix/Macomb intersection: 6.56 mi 4:28 hr
Almost immediately upon turning towards South Dix, you hit a rocky summit. It is deceptive as each time you climb up one, there is another behind it, until you finally reach the wooded summit with a trail marker turned backwards marked "South Dix" in sharpie. Immediately upon coming out of the trees the wind picked up (~40 mph) and we felt drops of rain. Huge dark cloud coming in so we decided to scramble up as fast as possible and leave East Dix for another time.
Summit South Dix: 6.81 mi, 4:46 hr 11:35 am
Back at Macomb cairn: 7.05 mi, 5:08 hr Stopped here for a short break since we did not linger at the summit. And then of course the sun came back out.
Macomb Summit: 7.56 mi, 5:39 hr
The trail to Macomb was gentle and pleasant. I was surprised by how quickly we got here.
Top of Macomb Slide: 7.95 mi, 6:51 hr
The trail to get to the slide was much steeper and narrower than I expected (took about 15 min). My first view of the slide was a little daunting.
It took me just under 45 minutes to make it down the slide to where the trail heads back into the woods. I Pretty much did just that - spent 75% of the
trek down sliding on my butt. My pants will never be the same. After this the trail was much more gentle.
Macomb Campsite: 9.21 mi, 7:44 hr (about 53 minutes)
Back at signin - 11.42 miles, Hiking time 8 hr 33 minutes, 3:40 pm
Saw only one other person the entire hike (in the morning on Hunters Pass Trail).
