Ascent Trip Report

Last time's schedule: leave from near L.A. (1100 ft. elevation) at 06:00, get to TH (11,800 ft.) about 14:00, head up. Result: turn around at 13,500ft.; come down fighting headache, mild confusion, dizziness, and inability to walk straight; retreat to 6,000 ft and take a painkiller to try sleep off the headache.

This time was very similar. Schedule: 12:00 Saturday leave Portland OR, 01:30 camp near Westgard Pass (7,200ft), 08:30 leave camp and drive up, 10:00 leave TH at 11,800 ft. Result: turn around at 13,200 ft.; come down fighting headache, mild confusion, inability to walk straight slightly helped by trekking poles this time; return to camp at 7,200 ft. and again take a painkiller to try to sleep off the headache (less necessary this time though... really it was just the headache not letting me get to sleep, wasn't as miserable as last time). Headache only completely cleared up a day later.

The easiest California 14er, but one of the few mountains I've failed twice on without succeeding. I seem to have trouble planning enough time to acclimatize properly for this peak. Next time I'm bringing Diamox!
