Ascent Trip Report

We started from Massie Gap Trailhead in Grayson Highlands State Park ($7 entrance fee to park at Massie Gap for a dayhike). Following the map and instructions given at the entrance kiosk, we followed the white blazes, taking the Rhododendron Trail to the Horse Trail to the Appalachian (spur) Trail. As per their flier, we had several close encounters with the descendants of Assateague and Chincoteague ponies, which had been released by the U.S. Forest Service into the area surrounding Mount Rogers National Recreation Area and Grayson Highlands State Park in 1975. Their purpose? To control the growth of brush along the Balds, which is a man-made landscape forged by extensive logging operations in the late 19th century. The Balds maintained a clear-cut appearance through the first half of the 20th century due to cattle ranching. These small horses acted as if we weren't there. We also saw a few cattle, though none of these animals were apparent while hiking up to Rogers from the last saddle.

We didn't take the alternative trails to also bag Pine Mtn, Wilburn Ridge, etc., because my 15-year-old son just wanted to get back on the road to Chicago to get sent back to his friends at home. On my list, however, was still to bag the high point of Kentucky, which we did the next morning.
