Ascent Trip ReportA fun hike with Toni to the summit on a very smoky day. The Carr Fire near Reading, CA was causing a ton of smoke to fill the air for the whole region, but we decided to give it a shot anyway. Trail from the paved road and parking lot is easy to find (can't miss it, just keep driving UP, then turn at the sign at the high point.
The trail itself is well groomed and gets a lot of hikers. It has some informative, "interpretive" signage along the way. The only real challenge is the elevation, which was taking its toll on Toni right out of the parking lot. She eventually settled in and we took it very slow. Near the very top is a sub-summit that is apparently intended for casual hikers, with four of the signs facing in different directions. The true summit isn't far away, but involves crossing about 100 meters of permanent snowfield, then heading up some moderately steep unmaintained and fairly loose use trail to the summit area. This proved tough for Toni, who was already really feeling the elevation, but she hung in there and made it to the top.
There were three outcrop "candidates" for the true summit, with two involving a few Class 3 moves to hit. The other is just a walkup, and has the USGS survey marker, though the one behind it may well be a few feet higher, in my opinion. I tagged all three just to be sure. Toni was bummed that there was no summit register anywhere to be found, but tagged the USGS marker summit.
Getting down was a lot easier for her, and we made good time after struggling on the loose trail near the top, then the snowfield.
We had started our day just north of Trinidad, CA (near Eureka/Arcata), and we ended up driving all the way back to Henderson, NV after finishing Lassen, which was probably a 900 mile driving day, including the part in the park (22 miles from the gate to the parking lot one way). I ended up driving nearly all of it, as Toni had to work the next morning and we got in at 4:15AM. I ended up with a neck issue and a nasty migraine that took nearly 24 hours of agony to get rid of. Next time she is calling in sick...
