Ascent Trip ReportThe HP of Sao Miguel island iS on its eastern side. You are supposed to get a permit as this is the breeding ground of the rare Azores bullfinch. Permits are free ( one per group) and can be applied for in advance via http://servicos-sraa.azores.gov.pt/doit/mdls/fill.asp?id_modelo=1451 . I received an instant permit by e mail. At the trailhead there is no indication a permit is needed. This is a popular walk.
Approach from North, turning off main coastal road at Algarvia, just east of coastal town of Achada. Follow gravel track uphill ( OK for 2WD) c 4 km to small parking area at 675m and signposted trailhead with map ( see Azores trails website re Pico da Vara trail PRC7SMI http://trails.visitazores.com/en ).
The 3.5KM path to the summit is easy to follow and a little steep in places, with mud/ gravel/ some steps underfoot. It takes you south to the ridge through Japanese Cedar and then east along a grassy ridge, with a small amount of descent and reascent. There is a trig at the summit with good views. Return the same way. |
