Ascent of Mount Jefferson on 2018-08-15Date: | Wednesday, August 15, 2018 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Mount Jefferson | Location: | USA-Oregon | Elevation: | 10497 ft / 3199 m |
Ascent Trip ReportHiked up the SW ridge, lots of smoke in the air. We packed a rope, pickets, crampons, and two axes each but didn't use any of this. We got to the red saddle and saw that it looked like you could go on top of the snowfield between the snow and rock over to the north side. Had to climb through a small snow/ice tunnel, but everything went pretty good. Found the lower section of the summit pinnacle quite straight forward. Found the last 20-30 feet to be pretty vertical, but not all that exposed and with good holds and feet and didn't have any issues climbing or downclimbing. It was 10 hours up and 7 hours down for us.
Tricky part for us was finding the gully feeding the SW ridge on the descent, made worse in the dark. It would be very helpful to have a gps track of this. |
