Ascent Trip Reportthe hike from the 4x4 trailhead was pleasant, generally along a use trail, with numerous cairns. the drive was the crux.
although older reports (and books) and websites, including climber.org suggest that 2wd can get to jefferson summit, i agree with several recent trip reports: 2wd shouldn't attempt this trailhead. in fact i'm not even sure 9" clearance SUVs should attempt the old 2wd trailhead. this approach is more of a 4x4 adventure now. i scraped my range rover's skid plate a couple times. there was a ditch which longer wheelbase vehicles might have issues with. i tested my new all-terrain tires on nasty rocks for a lot of the upper portion of the drive. overall it's just a 4x4 drive, and i don't recommend it for normal SUVs.
the forest service was grading the road today, and that added a bit of spice in the morning as we passed the grader... but overall it didn't improve the more difficult portions of the road.
oh when you do get to the gate in the fence: transition from west to east mid-way up the drive, and then further up go back to west (you have to look carefully for where the barbed wire is cut, rather than just laying on the ground). we tried both sides of the fence on the upper part of the drive, and the west was worse than the east.
i've attached the driving track. it took 1h20m to drive in, and 1h to drive out.
